Step 1 - Foundation

Step one is all about laying the foundations to ensure we have a successful SEO strategy. Whilst we have laid this out as Step 1 - Step 4 please understand that lots of elements crossover in different areas of each step so this is just a guideline to show you some elements of work we carry out on your behalf.

·     Client Fact Find

·     Keyword Research

·     Mobile First Website

·     Website Structure

·     Images

Client Fact Find

It starts with a thorough fact find with the client to find out the services or goods that the client provides and the areas which the client targets.

As an SEO agency the fact find is a key part of understanding how we are going to help you, our client, to achieve the success that you want through higher rankings on the search engines and other marketing strategies.

In simple terms it means we need to understand who your ideal customer is and where your ideal customer lives. By understanding your target audience it enables us to set up everything else to target this audience in the areas that you have selected.

Keyword Research

This leads on to basic keyword research. Once we understand who your ideal customer is and where they live we can do some basic keyword research to ensure that your website and your webpages are targeting the right people with the right keywords.

Having the right keywords and the correct LSI (latent semantic) keywords on your website is key to it to ranking high for those keywords. For example, if you were a plumber supplying a 24 hour emergency service but don’t use the words 24 hour emergency service on your webpage or your website how would google or the customer know?

Our basic keyword research will ensure that we have all the major keywords to target your customers in the areas that they live and operate and ensure that each webpage is designed to target these keywords.

Mobile First Websites

This leads on to mobile first websites. Google has made it clear that it will give prominence to websites that are designed mobile first.

Mobile first does not mean a responsive website such as those supplied on WordPress and similar sites that merely change shape when somebody is on a mobile device.

Mobile first means exactly what it says.

The website was designed with mobile devices as its priority. In other words the text is easily read and elements such as the images have been optimised so that they are small file sizes for mobile, because a key element of a mobile device is the speed of loading the page.

Mobile users have small screens so instructions and information needs to be clear. It also needs to be simple to take action on elements on the page, so if somebody landed on a page looking for a plumber in Swansea you would want the telephone number to be clickable and any forms to be clickable.

Mobile first is all about making the website easy to use view understand and interact with on a mobile device.

Depending on the SEO package you sign up for with us we can provide a mobile first website free of charge if your website and its present format will hinder our ability to generate higher rankings.

Mobile-first indexing best practices

Mobile-first indexing means Google predominantly uses the mobile version of the content for indexing and ranking. Historically, the index primarily used the desktop version of a page's content when evaluating the relevance of a page to a user's query. Since the majority of users now access Google Search with a mobile device, Googlebot primarily crawls and indexes pages with the smartphone agent going forward.

Website Structure

As part of laying the foundations we inspect your website looking at its structure which is a key element of Google is to help your webpages rank higher.

When we talk about structure perhaps the simplest way to explain it would be taking a plumbers website as an example.

The plumber might provide various services such as central heating, bathroom installation, outdoor plumbing, etc. Each of the services should be in its own pillar, its own vertical corridor on your website.

Website Structure

The diagram shows a simple and basic structure.

We already mentioned keywords earlier and using the structure we make sure that the correct keywords are used under the correct pillars. This strengthens the structure of your website and makes it easier for Google to understand what each individual page and what each individual pillar is all about.

The keywords and the pillars of your website also ties together with the URL structure of your website. You may be providing central heating service as a plumber so in this pillar the URLs of your website might be domain.com/central-heating/keyword/ where the keyword can be any of the services that you provide for central heating. (domain.com/central-heating/radiator-installation/)

Images

Images are a key element on any website and any webpage but it’s also important that they are set up to maximise for SEO benefits. When we say maximise the SEO benefits, the image itself can be called the keywords. For an image of a boiler it could actually be called central-heating-boiler.jpg

Images also have what they call 'Alt' text and you can use a variation of the same keyword, a LSI (latent semantic) keyword as the 'Alt' text. Where we’ve just talked about the central-heating-boiler.jpg we may want to use the keyword 'Combi boiler' as the 'Alt' text.

Images are another way to get keywords onto your webpage on the topic that you are talking about on the webpage.

There are also other things to consider with images such as optimising them to be the smallest file, while still producing an image that is attractive to look at and readable.

If your images are optimised and SEO tagged correctly your images can actually drive traffic to your website when people carry out image searches or Google chooses to show your images when people are doing a search using keywords you target.
